Included in the liner notes is a slightly altered version of a passage from the Book of Revelation , which reads,. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more Death. Neither sorrow, nor crying. Neither shall there be any more brain; for the former things are passed away. The actual text from Chapter 21, Verse 4 is nearly identical, except that it reads, "neither shall there be any more pain" rather than "brain", which was added as a pun on the album's title. In a lower corner on the back side of the album cover, there is this message: "No synthesizers or ulterior motives". Lyrically, the album largely reflects the group's literary interests, such as "To Tame a Land", inspired by Frank Herbert 's science fiction novel Dune ; [7] "Sun and Steel", based on the life of samurai Miyamoto Musashi [8] and its title taken from Yukio Mishima 's essay ; "Still Life", influenced by Ramsey Campbell 's short story " The Inhabitant of the Lake ", [8] and " The Trooper ", inspired by Alfred, Lord Tennyson 's The Charge of the Light Brigade Hutton film , scripted by Alistair MacLean , [10] and "Quest for Fire", based on the film by Jean-Jacques Annaud.
Chesterton 's hymn O God of Earth and Altar , [12] while the remainder of the song is influenced by Aleister Crowley. At the beginning of the sixth track, "Still Life", the band included a hidden message which could only be understood by playing the song backwards. This was a joke and an intended swing back at the critics who had accused Iron Maiden of being Satanic. The backwards-message features McBrain mimicking actor John Bird 's impression of Idi Amin , uttering the following phrase "What ho said the t'ing with the three 'bonce', don't meddle with things you don't understand The phrase itself is taken from the satirical album The Collected Broadcasts of Idi Amin by Bird and Alan Coren. It was re-released by Sanctuary and Columbia Records in the United States in The album's cover artwork is notable for its Ancient Egypt theme. That theme, taken from the title track, was carried over to the album's supporting tour, the World Slavery Tour. This began in Warsaw , Poland, on 9 August ; it is widely regarded as being the band's longest and most arduous tour to date, and led to the live album Live After Death.
The release contains a musical re-telling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge 's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner , the lyrics of which include some lines from the poem. At 13 minutes and 45 seconds in length, this was Iron Maiden's longest song for over 30 years until it was surpassed by the minute " Empire of the Clouds " from the album The Book of Souls. Powerslave is notable as the band's first album to feature the same personnel as their previous studio release. This lineup would remain intact for two further studio releases. It is also their last album to date to feature an instrumental piece, and the only one until Senjutsu in which longtime member and guitarist Dave Murray does not have a songwriting credit.
Following the conclusion of their highly successful World Piece Tour in December , during which Iron Maiden headlined large venues and arenas in the US for the first time in their career, [1] the band took three weeks off in January , before regrouping at Le Chalet Hotel in Jersey where they rehearsed for six weeks. Bassist Steve Harris recalled how, under time pressure, the song "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" was written in a relatively short space of time. Once finished, the band undertook another short break while the album was mixed at Electric Lady Studios , New York, before reconvening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to rehearse for the World Slavery Tour. The tour was the first time a heavy metal band had taken a full set behind the Iron Curtain , visiting Poland and Hungary, a landmark achievement at the time.
